![]() Disney searched through five continents and over 1000 candidates for the role of Mulan before deciding on Yifei. Disney previously adapted the legend into the 1998 animated film of the same name starring Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, B.D. Mulan is based on a Chinese legend about Hua Mulan, a young female warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to join the Chinese military, taking the place of her aging father, to protect her country from the threats they face. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed The Chinese Widow’s Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Lui, has been chosen to portray Mulan. Who Is Liu Yifei, Chinese Actress Cast As ‘Mulan?’ĭisney has found its actress to play the title role in the live action adaptation of Mulan. It's not an R, but the Motion Picture Associate of America has decided that no one under the age of 13 should be able to see Mulan unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. And the Eddie Murphy voiced dragon Mushu has also landed in the dumpster, making this a more realistic, streamlined take on the classic story. Mulan is treating its source material much more seriously than previous live-action Disney remakes. The first of these live-action remakes to earn such an honor. ![]() And it has just been given a PG-13 rating. Mulan is getting ready for its March 25 debut. That all changes with their next live-action remake. Up until this very second in time, Disney has been content with every single one of its live-action remakes based on a classic animated movie getting a PG or G rating. Mulan Is the First Live-Action Disney Remake to Get a PG-13 Rating It also came out the same year as Disney’s animated feature, which means young readers could have picked it up around the same time they saw the film on the big screen. The Ballad of Mulan (1998) While this picture book is geared at a young audience, it’s notable because it includes the text of one of the early poem versions in the untranslated Chinese, alongside a prose translation by author-illustrator Song Nan Zhang. If you just can’t get enough of Mulan, check out these other versions of her story. But the legend of Mulan had been around a lot longer-the first transcription of the story appears in the sixth century, and the earliest film version appeared in 1927. So, I was a bit irritated, but for the sake of a better story it fits to have the drama, but I was annoyed because they built it up and left me hanging. The 1998 animated Disney’s Mulan introduced many in Western audiences to the legend of a young Chinese woman who disguised herself as a man to fight against an invading army. Again this is the writers fault for wanting the dramatic hero, but it fits with the characters even though the other option would have been possible. They continued on the noble character arc for Mulan where she just wants to take care of her father. This plot has a romance but they forced it into a bad ending. The original version has her just returning home. I know the same scenes will still effect me in the same way.Ī bit spoilery but not if you know the story of Mulan. Hua Mulan truly transforms and even if you know how it ends you can still appreciate the sacrifices of our characters. For when you feel like crying this is a great option. As long as you don't question how they never notice she is a girl, you'll enjoy it. They act nobly and I was completely satisfied until the very end. There are parts that really got to me where I was sobbing but the situations were caused by war and so our characters have to deal with it. The music really helps finish the atmosphere. This is Mulan's story and it reflects that in the screen time given to our other characters. Vicki Zhou is wonderful as Mulan, and we don't spend a lot of time with the other characters, but we don't really need it. The story is fulfilling as we get to see Mulan grow and accept life as a soldier and the many different ways there are to be a hero. You will cry and then continue crying but you won't end up feeling depressed or sad. This a realistic movie, slightly dark tone because there is a lot of death, but it's the kind of movie that hurts so good. We get the real Mulan that went to war for over a decade. ![]() She deals with death and grief and fear and killing. ![]() She does join the army in place of her father, but we see how it affects her. This review may contain spoilers Based more on the original poem/story of Mulan than Disney version.
